Custodial Sector Creates £200m opportunities for 2023

A brand-new prison and the expansion of an existing custodial facility has created opportunities worth nearly £200m for Kier Construction and Galliford Try as we enter 2023.

The new £100m prison (which replaces the existing HMP Barlinnie Prison (Est. 1882)) will be built on a former gas works in Glasgow and will house 1200 inmates. Construction firm Kier Construction is working alongside HMP Glasgow Strategic Alliance to deliver houseblock-style communities of 20 cells (previously 30), which will see the existing three large houseblocks replaced by five smaller houseblocks. The layout aims to create a household model rather than a ‘super wing’ approach.

The investment from the Scottish Government will enable the continuing development of a prison estate which is fit for the 21st century and the plans also contain a continued commitment to delivering a net zero carbon facility which meets the Scottish Government’s Net Zero Public Sector Buildings Standard.

The £95m expansion of HMP Rye Hill, Rugby, which is managed by Onley Prison Services and operated by G4S Care & Justice Services, aims to improve facilities for staff, prisoners and visitors to the Category B men’s private prison. It has exclusively housed sex offenders since 2014.
